LEARN ENGLISH INTERROGATIVE PRONOUNS

Interrogative pronouns are the words we place at the beginning of questions. Some of them refer only to people, like "who" and others refer to people and objects, etc like "what". They do not distinguish between singular and plural, so they only have one form.

WHAT (qué), WHICH (cuál, cuáles), WHO (quién, quiénes), WHOSE (de quién, de quiénes), WHOM (quién, quiénes)

We use the interrogative pronouns at the beginning of questions. E.g.:

What time is it? (¿Qué hora es?)

WHAT can be used to ask about objects or people E.g.:

What time is it? (¿Qué hora es?)

What is your name? (¿Cómo te llamas?)

WHICH can be used to ask about objects or people E.g.:

Which jumper do you like? (¿Cuál jersey te gusta?)

Which is your mother? (¿Cuál es tu madre?) (Asking about a group of people)

WHO can be used to ask about people E.g.:

Who are you? (¿Quién eres?)

WHOSE can be used to ask about a possession relation E.g.:

Whose is this book? (¿De quién es este libro?)

WHOM can be used to ask about people. It is less usual and more formal than "who" E.g.:

Whom did you phone? (¿A quién llamaste?)
