LEARN ENGLISH PERSONAL PRONOUNS

Personal pronouns refer to the person who is doing the action or to whom the action affects. In that way we distinguish two types of personal pronouns:

Personal Subject Pronouns and Personal Object Pronouns.

Personal Subject Pronouns. I (yo), you (tú), he (él), she (ella), it ("ello"), we (nosotros /as), you (vosotros /as) and they (ellos /as).. We use the Personal Subject Pronouns to refer to the person who is doing the action of the verb or the verb speaks about. E.g.:

Peter is listening to music. He listens to music every day. (Peter está escuchando música. Él escucha música todos los días)

In this case, "he" substitutes "Peter" which is the subject of the sentence.

Personal Object Pronouns. Me, You, Him, Her, It, Us, You and Them. We use the Personal Object Pronouns to refer to the person whom the action of the verbs affects. E.g.:

I bought Mary some flowers. (Le compré flores a Mary)

In this case we have two objects: "Mary" who is the recipient of the action of the verb (this object is called indirect object or complement), and "flowers" which is the result of the action of the verb (this object is called direct object or complement). Both objects can be substituted by a pronoun and we would have: I bought her some flowers.

I bought them for Mary. (Le compré flores. Las compré para Mary)
