LEARN SPANISH INTERROGATIVE AND EXCLAMATORY PRONOUNS

QUÉ (what), QUIÉN (-ES) (who), CUÁNTO (-A, -OS, -AS) (how much), CUÁL (-ES) (which). We use the Interrogative pronouns at the beginning of the questions and only prepositions can go before them. QUÉ (what) can be used to ask about objects.

Example

¿Qué hora es? (What time is it?)

QUIÉN / QUIÉNES (who) can be used to ask about people

Example

¿Quién eres? (Who are you?)

CUÁNTO, CUÁNTA, CUÁNTOS, CUÁNTAS (how much, how many) can be used to ask about quantity.

Example

¿Cuántos gatos tienes? (How many cats do you have?)

CUÁL, CUÁLES (which) can be used to ask about objects or people.

Example

¿Cuál jersey te gusta? (Which jumper do you like?)

¿Cuál es tu madre? (Which is your mother?) (Asking about a group of people)

Exclamatory pronouns are used to express emotions: surprise, feelings, etc. They are written with "tilde" (written accent) and they always go between exclamation marks. QUÉ (what, how), QUIÉN (who), CUÁNTO (how, how much)

Example

¡Qué calor! (How hot it is!)

In this example, "qué" (how) is used to highlight that the speaker is very hot.

*NOTE*: Nouns in Spanish have gender so, when you want to substitute them for a pronoun you have to bear that in mind and choose accordingly.

*NOTE* In Spanish, most of the pronouns go before the verb, unlike in English.
