Demonstrators burn the King's Photo.

Young protesters in Catalonia have burnt photos of the Spanish King in a campaign for the abolishment of the monarchy and the independence of their region. A small minority of Catalonian’s have been fighting for their independence from Spain for many decades and their failed attempts have turned their frustrations on the monarchy.

The parties responsible for the burning of the King’s photo could face prosecution with the possibility of jail time, of what some claim to be up to 2 years. Others claim, if the parties are prosecuted, it is a violation of their freedom of speech.

Juan Carlos, King of Spain, has been a key figure in the recent history of the country. He has been a fundamental part in the transition of Spain from the dictatorship under Francisco Franco to the Democratic Monarchy that Spain enjoys today.

The last 30 years have been the most stable and successful in the history of the country. The Spaniards benefit from the rights that the constitution of 1978 gives to them. They have freedom of speech (excluding the burning of certain photos) and freedom to express and manifest their beliefs.

Since November 27 1975 Juan Carlos has been an excellent ambassador of Spain and as fought hard to ensure democracy and freedom remain as the backbone of Spanish liberty.

Questionable. Jailing a protester for burning a photo of the King does not sit well for an educated and stable democratic society. The King of Spain devoted much of his life for the democratic freedoms for the people of Spain, surely he would of enjoyed the freedom that he helped provide, allowing the protesters to perform that act. I think secretly he did.
